Jackie Robinson Week
MLB honors Jackie Robinson each year on April 15th, the day he stepped on the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers. We extended that honor by celebrating the entire week.
We began the celebration in KC where we were invited to be part of the Jazz & Jackie Celebration at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. We had a free community program on April 14 at the historic Gem Theatre in the 18th & Vine district and did a 2nd program on April 15 for students and student athletes. The panel discussions and Q&A sessions featured Lauren Meyer - Director, Bob Kendrick - NLBM President, Dee Jackson - NBC Sports Reporter, and Darwin Pennye - Executive Director of the KC Urban Youth Academy.
Next we headed south to Dallas thanks to an invitation from the Texas Rangers. We put on a free event for the community at the Texas Rangers Youth Academy. Delino DeShields Jr. - Rangers CF and Darren Oliver - 20 year veteran pitcher joined us for the evening. The Q&A session was moderated by Juan Garciga - Director, Youth Academy & Youth Baseball Programs at Texas Rangers Baseball Club. It was a blast and we were thrilled to see kids and grownups inspired and motivated by the stories from the players who paved the way.
